Alexandria’s Science & Technology Team supports the company by providing scientific and technical expertise to help guide Alexandria’s three major activities: venture capital investment, real estate, and thought leadership. This role will support all of these activities.

Venture capital investment activities, conducted through Alexandria Venture Investments, the company’s strategic venture capital platform, include helping identify and invest in innovative life science companies, including biotech and agtech, and managing all related due diligence for potential investments, including in-depth reviews of a company’s technology, key focus area(s), competitive landscape, and the strength and level of innovation of each opportunity.

Real estate activities include performing diligence on potential life science, agtech, and technology tenants, as well as monitoring existing tenants through reviews of financials, scientific milestones, news and press releases, and meetings with management teams.

Thought leadership activities include curating events to convene life science executives, investors, and industry experts across our ecosystems, in both formal and informal ways. Activities may also include supporting national engagement opportunities.

We are seeking a Vice President – Science & Technology for our San Francisco Bay Area office. The incumbent will have a scientific background and strategic business acumen and may have previous experience in biopharma corporate strategy, consulting for early-stage companies, or venture capital. This individual will be a skilled cross-functional communicator and true team player with the ability to interpret data and communicate the big picture to a diverse set of stakeholders to support the above activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Regional Strategy and Ecosystem Business Development

  • Maintain a strong presence and network throughout the San Francisco Bay Area life science ecosystem, including academic, biopharma, and venture communities.

  • Work closely with leaders of the San Francisco Bay Area regional office to help identify growth opportunities for Alexandria’s real estate portfolio.

  • Gather and interpret data from multiple sources to identify ecosystem trends that may impact Alexandria’s real estate business.

  • Develop events and programs to help support the growth of the San Francisco Bay Area life science ecosystem and to increase Alexandria’s visibility in the region.

  • Attend industry-related events and workshops to promote Alexandria.

  • As requested, lead or support internal projects that require coordination across multiple functional teams.

  • Create written reports and presentations for executive management.

Venture Investments and Tenant Underwriting

  • Lead San Francisco Bay Area venture investment strategy and execution, including:

  • Identification, diligence, and execution of early-stage venture investments within the San Francisco Bay Area region,

  • Routine monitoring of companies within the Alexandria Venture Investments portfolio, including through management calls, analysis of scientific progress, and assessment of fundraising activities,

  • Regular meetings with local LP relationships and diligence for potential new fund commitments, and

  • Management of the local Alexandria Venture Investments team.

  • Contribute to the tenant underwriting process, which includes an ongoing evaluation of a company’s science, management teams, financials, etc.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a life science-related field required: MS or MBA required; PhD or MD preferred.

  • Minimum 10 years of biotech industry, consulting, or venture investment experience required.

  • Experience managing 1−5 direct reports preferred.

  • Strong connections to the San Francisco Bay Area life science ecosystem (universities, venture community, companies, etc.) required.

  • Demonstrated track record of synthesizing data and presenting strategic concepts required.

  • Ability to multi-task and communicate effectively; excellent written communications and presentations a must.

  • Strong research and analytical skills required; finance experience preferred.

  • Ability to communicate with co-workers, management, and others in a courteous and professional manner a must.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint required.

  • Some travel required.

  • The expected base salary range for this position is $300,000 USD to $380,000 USD annually. This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on the consideration of many factors, which may include, but are not limited to: the individual’s knowledge, experience, education, qualifications, skills, job location, and the Company’s compensation practices.
